Blast from the past - 1990's

Hayley Millington, now ART DIRECTOR at 'K2 the salon' and more recently reached the finals of the Wella Trend Vision Awards 2009, talks about her modern apprenticeship in an information pack created by the careers service and distributed to year 11s in the 1990s .

cameo owned by Philip Minton is now known as K2 the Salon

"When I was about 13 -14 I knew that hairdressing was what i wanted to do, and got a saturday job at Cameo.
I first heard about Modern Apprenterships on school work experience. Someone from the careers branch came to the school and checked what we needed and i went from there.
I left school, Cameo took me on and I started going to college one day a week. I'd recommend the Modern Apprenticeship - if you ever want to get your own salon and be able to train apprentices and assess them, or work in college, training to be a beautician next."

Hayley has designs on hair styling title

"A creative town hair and make up artist has taken the first steps on her way to international success after wowing judges of a style competition with her techniques.

Hayley Millington, art director at K2 Salon in the Darwin Shopping Centre, was put through to the regional stages of the colour category of the Wella Trend Vision completion 2009 after her make up and hair combinations were seen by judges earlier this year.

Hayley has works at the salon for around 19 years and said she was delighted to make it to the regional heats where she has to recreate her original look on a mode in front of judges, as well as having to perform in an evening fashion show.

Judgement Day

She will take part in the Midlands regional heat at Chesford Grange in Kenilworth on May 26, which is one of four heats to be held across the country during the month.

She said if she made it through this live judgement day representing the Midlands, she could be put through to the national and then possibly the international stages.

Hayley, 34 said: “I’m very pleased about getting though to the regional heats, there were obviously so many applicants and it just gives me a chance to show off my creative talents and hopefully get as far as I can.” Shopshire Star 13/05/09
